PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

These wall-based works are 1 : 1 scale translations of control panels that were a prominent feature of IBM's iconic mainframe computer system of the 1960s. These panels containing indicator lights, numerical displays, switches and an 'emergency pull-stop' and were primarily used by technicians who were required to service the machines for one hour out of every 10 hours of operation. Designed according to strict principals of intelligibility and ergonomics, they simultaneously speak to both formalist principles of composition and minimalist sensibilities of rationalization and seriality. The panels are milled from solid aluminum plate and mounted a few inches off the wall. [ - ]
