PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

A proposal for a corporate space. The original forms of the IBM 360 computer would be reproduced at 1 : 1 scale in topiary and hedging in an outdoor garden setting. Worktables and magnetic storage disks would be reproduced in cast concrete or polished steel and integrated with the topiary. While bearing some similarity to the maze-like compositions of traditional European gardens, the piece would quickly assert an uncanny and distinct phenomenological presence on the viewer. Appearing like a scale-shifted block and slab design resonant of mid-century modernist development projects, the work examines IBM 360's now outdated spatial language (in corporate and computation topologies as well as interior design) and displaces its previously productive forms into a symbolic aristocratic space.
